Show & Tell - Motorcycles and Steampunk - September 6

So, what do Motorcycles and Steampunk have in common? Of course its the Creative, DIY-Type, Makers among us. Check out this month's Show & Tell lineup.

Electric Scooter

Our September Show & Tell is turning into a bike week. We have Richard Brull's son coming if he can get a pass from home to stay out past bed time. He is almost ten years old and built his own electric scooter. We're expecting many future inventions from this young man. He was the envy of his scout troop when building their pinewood derby cars. His scoutmaster asked the troop what kind of tools would you use when building the cars and he answered “a CNC machine”.

Air Fleet Noir

We're looking forward to a crew from Air Fleet Noir dropping by. You'll want to be present when Dana Munaco, First Officer of her airship arrives to provide a proper introduction into the world of Steampunk. This is an art-form to be experienced from the Maker perspective. Exquisite costumes, handmade devices and all kinds of equipment necessary for any retro-futuristic expedition. On those rare occasions when Dana is earthbound you can find her participating in the annual Bikers for Babies ride.

Other suggested steampunk sites include - The Lawrence Steampunk Society.

Grace Specialties

It is the characters we meet that make events like our Mini Maker Faire a success. We met Virginia Phillips when she came down to the Parkville Days Riverfest and spent some time hanging out at our tent. She has a cool exercise bike and rode it around down there. We learned she is a leather seamstress and her business, Grace Specialties, does work for all of the city's motorcycle shops. She found a way of combining her love of costume and garment making along with nursing skills and is a leader in training for motorcycle accident scene management. We're looking forward to hearing more about the tools she uses and some of her creations.

Racing Conditions

If flying on the ground is wrong, don't tell Tom Collins. For fun he likes to take his racing motorcycle out to Topeka's Heartland Park track and do just that. Looking for ways to improve performance, he's designing a data logging system to record the bike's vital statistics, speed, and GPS position to play back and see how well he's hitting his marks along the track.

Check out the Fab Lab

We hope you will come for the Show & Tell and bring a few friends. The Fab Lab is going to be an exciting place for Makers when it opens to the public. All kinds of cool tools including milling machines, lathes, 3D printers, 3d scanner, and more equipment to build the creations of your dreams.

Come early to check out the facilities from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. and stay for the show 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
